Meowgic

Official illustration by Clément de Ruyter

Meowgic is a form of enchantment developed long ago by the cats of the Kingdom. It pervades daily life, helping crafters in their workshops, soldiers in the field, and Kittens tidying their rooms alike.

It is supernatural and sometimes unpredictable, but always useful. Every Kitten learns a few spells during their upbringing. The most gifted go on to Highcastle School to deepen their study.

Book 2: The Source of Meowgic is devoted to meowgic and its mysteries.

Meowgic paths

Spells are organized into paths, tied to the Kitten's core abilities. A Kitten can freely mix paths.

Casting a spell

To cast a spell, the player rolls the ability tied to its path. She must score a number of successes equal to the spell's difficulty. Each spell can be cast only once per day: the Kitten has then spent the energy it takes and only gets it back the next morning.

A Kitten can reset an already-cast spell at any time by spending a Heart point.

Other forms of the supernatural

Meowgic is no longer the exclusive domain of Cats. Other species develop their own powers, distinct in nature and in style. A few examples found across the world:

  • Souricellerie (mousecraft): practiced by mice and small rodents
  • Fourmilèges (ant-meowgic): the powers of the Ant queen Tlapa and her guardians
  • Pouvoirs moutants (ewetant powers): taught to the young prodigies at the Institute of Professor Javier, a sheep with atrophied legs
  • Sombre chabbat (dark sabbath): wielded by the secret society of the Blackcats, led by Patte-de-mort
  • Mancie éléphantaire (elephantomancy): practiced by Maître Ing, the vigilante Elephant who safeguards the balance among all wielders of the supernatural

The Kanjarei

The Kanjarei are five very ancient Animals with uncommon powers.
