The Hook

Behind the Wall and the Salt Gate stretches the Hook, the poor, sordid and run-down district where the city's lowly hands live: waiters, servants, brewery workers, fishers, fishmongers. Filth is everywhere. After nightfall it is no place to linger: the cunning Maggots and the brutal Red Hooks of Balthazar the lizard rule here.

Among its notable spots are the Daedalus District, a wasteland full of holes and fissures, the inn Ici Mieux qu'en Face !, the shabbiest in town, run by Piquette the skunk, and The Shack, the most dilapidated building in the district, where the most destitute families are crammed together.
