The Ballroom

The Ballroom is a vast round vaulted hall with perfect sound, hidden in the Sewers beneath the Soot District and cut off from the surface. Bruno, a mannered and charming Cat, once found a barrel organ and its whole collection of punched cards there.

At first a few Cats came down to dance in a small private circle. Word of mouth swelled the crowd.

To avoid drawing Walter's attention, Bruno installed sliding walls and secret doors that turn the approaches into a maze whose layout changes every week. Only the residents of the Soot District are told, and no noble from the tower has ever come down to slum it here.
